Gutenberg Society is a New York-based literary agency founded in 1985 by Eric Schmidt.
We represent writers of fiction and nonfiction. The work begins with reading: understanding a manuscript, discussing what it needs, and deciding how best to present it to publishers.
We help authors prepare their projects for submission, identify suitable editors, and negotiate the terms of publication. We remain involved as questions arise during publication and in the author's subsequent work.
We look for writing with something to say and the skill to say it well. In fiction, that may be a convincing voice, a well-observed character, or a story that holds our attention. In nonfiction, we want a clear subject and an author who knows it.
A submission should give us a sense of both the book and the person writing it. Tell us what you have written, who it is for, and what experience you bring to the subject.
We discuss the manuscript or proposal with the author and consider revisions before approaching editors.
A submission needs a reason to land on an editor's desk. We consider the book's subject, readership, and place on a publisher's list.
We discuss offers with the author and negotiate the rights, payments, and obligations set out in a publishing agreement.
Please read the submission instructions before sending your work. They explain what to include and where to send it.
